Shocking as it may be, my hair colour is not natural. I am no mother of dragons, nor am I a Disney princess. Hair-wise, I am an absolutely phony, and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future. The truth is – I love being blonde. I’ve been a brunette. I’ve also attempted to highlight my natural hair. But being blonde has always made me feel lighter, livelier, and more “me.” Unfortunately, it also means I’m causing a lot of damage to my hair. So when Amarante Beauty asked if I would try out their damage control product line, I said yes.
Disclaimer here: I’m not someone who would jump on just any hair care train that comes whizzing by. There are few hair care products that I would actually recommend. For this reason I met Monica, a representative of Amarante Beauty, for coffee so I could learn the story behind the brand and get to know the products better; I was pleased to discover that a lot of care went into the creation of this line.
About Amarante Beauty
Amarante Beauty is a Canadian hair care brand inspired by the Amaranth flower, which is rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Each product is fortified with the AMA complex, which is made up of Amaranth oil, protein, and leaf extract. All of the products are free of sulphates, parabens, phthalates, and cruelty, and they’re also careful to use recyclable materials in their packaging.
How It Works
The oil that is extracted from the Amaranth seeds has a restorative, anti-frizz effect on hair because it’s rich in squalene (which is also found naturally in hair and skin). Amaranth protein is a high concentration of peptides and polysaccharides that replace lost proteins in hair fibre, providing a detangling effect. Amaranth leaf extract helps to restore the natural movement of healthy hair.
The Damage Solution shampoo and conditioner contain proteins and amino acids that repair damaged cuticles. The shampoo is sulphate free, so it doesn’t lather as much as a regular shampoo would, but in this case bubbles do not equal cleanliness. You only need to use a small amount of the conditioner as it’s extremely hydrating and too much of it will weigh down your hair.
I use the AMA flower oil on the ends of my hair after I’m out of the shower to lock in moisture. It’s lightweight and not at all greasy. Again, you only need a small amount. It can also be used as a finishing touch after styling on dry hair.
The AMA dual revitalizing spray acts like a midday refresher. I like to use it in the afternoon or before I go out at night if I don’t have time to restyle. It’s great for taming frizz, adding shine and bounce, and leaves you with an overall refreshed feeling.
I’ve been using these four products for a month and the results have left me very pleasantly surprised. My hair is definitely smoother and feels less tangled throughout the day. Normally by the afternoon I can barely run my fingers through it. Now it’s much less knotted and there’s a softness to it – especially the top half of my head that has seen less damage. I can only imagine how silky my hair would be had I not put it through so much turmoil! The ends aren’t as brittle as they once were either.
Overall I’m excited to continue to use the Damage Solution line. My ultra-damaged hair has responded to the products very quickly, so I’m looking forward to seeing the long-term results.
